Cost to run

How much does a dehumidifier cost to run?

A dehumidifier runs a compressor like a small air conditioner, and damp basements can keep it working many hours a day. Cost hinges on room humidity, target setting, and unit capacity.

Humidity load drives runtime

The unit cycles against incoming moisture the way an air conditioner cycles against heat. Ground moisture, shower and laundry humidity, outdoor air leaks, and the humidistat target all determine how many hours the compressor works each day.

Capacity ratings versus electrical draw

Dehumidifiers are sold by pints removed per day, but bills depend on watts and hours. A larger-capacity unit often costs less to operate in a very damp space because it reaches the target humidity and shuts off sooner than an undersized one running nonstop.

What stays outside this moisture estimate

The model does not measure your room's humidity load, compare integrated-energy-factor ratings, or include heat the unit adds to the space. Fixing water intrusion or venting sources of moisture cuts cost more reliably than any setting change.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my dehumidifier seem to run constantly?
Either the moisture load exceeds the unit's capacity or the target humidity is set very low. Persistent water entry can keep any unit at a near-continuous duty cycle.
Does a dehumidifier heat the room?
Yes, slightly. Compressor waste heat plus the latent heat released by condensing water warms the space, which is often welcome in basements and unwelcome in summer bedrooms.
Is it cheaper to run it only at night?
Under the flat state-average rate modeled here, cost depends only on total runtime. Time-of-use tariffs, which are not modeled, could change that arithmetic.
