Humidity load drives runtime

The unit cycles against incoming moisture the way an air conditioner cycles against heat. Ground moisture, shower and laundry humidity, outdoor air leaks, and the humidistat target all determine how many hours the compressor works each day.

Capacity ratings versus electrical draw

Dehumidifiers are sold by pints removed per day, but bills depend on watts and hours. A larger-capacity unit often costs less to operate in a very damp space because it reaches the target humidity and shuts off sooner than an undersized one running nonstop.
