The heated bed is the main consumer

Reaching and holding bed temperature takes the largest share of a printer's power, cycling harder for high-temperature materials like ABS than for PLA. The hotend, steppers, fans, and mainboard together often draw less than the bed alone.

Material choice sets the thermal budget

PLA's low bed and nozzle temperatures make it the cheapest filament to run, PETG sits in the middle, and ABS or ASA demand hot beds and often enclosures that lengthen heating cycles. An enclosure, once warm, actually helps the bed cycle less.

What the printing scenarios leave out

First-layer heating spikes, filament dryers, LED lighting, and attached computers or cameras are excluded, as are resin printers whose UV arrays and cure stations follow different profiles. Failed prints waste the same electricity as successful ones — the model cannot fix that.

Frequently asked questions

Does an overnight print use a lot of electricity?
A ten-hour PLA print typically consumes only around one to two kilowatt-hours — cheap compared with the filament it uses. The scenarios price full monthly patterns.
Is ABS more expensive to print than PLA?
Electrically yes: hotter bed, hotter nozzle, and enclosure warm-up all extend high-draw time. Material cost differences usually still outweigh the electricity gap.
Should I turn the printer off between prints?
Idle printers with heaters off draw little, but standby across days adds up like any electronics. Off at the switch costs nothing but reheat time.
